Kennesaw Mountain road could close to cars, bikes every day starting next summer [Video]

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park gets more than 1 million visitors a year.

As that number continues to climb, park officials say a major change could be coming next summer.

Kennesaw Mountain Drive, the winding road to the top of the mountain, has become a very popular place for hikers and bikers. On weekends, it’s closed off to cars and bicycles.

“We ended up coming down the road and it was really nice not having to worry about cars,” said hiker Araceli Gallegos.

This may become the new normal on the paved 1.2-mile drive, as the National Park Service will likely adopt a proposal to stop bikes and cars from going up the mountain every day starting in summer 2024.

Anyone can submit input on the proposal through the park service’s website through July 12.

“When you have a lot more people, you have a lot more troubles as well,” Gallegos said.
