Junior’s Recycling in Mesa is now temporarily closed following outcry from homeowners living right next door to it.
MESA, Ariz. — It turned a once quiet neighborhood into an industrial zone.
Junior’s Recycling in far east Mesa, next to the Loop 202 on Main Street, was known as the place to go locally for turning in scrap metal for cash, according to several neighbors who live right next to it.
However, Maricopa County officials said it was operating illegally for years because the land it sat on was only zoned for commercial use, not industrial use.
Dozens of homes neighbor the scrapyard, with Mike Milligan living in one of them. He said seven days a week, he would wake up to the loud roaring of an excavator.
“Even having to get up past midnight because they were over there cutting scrap,” Milligan said.
