ABBEVILLE, Ala. (WTVY) – Safety and well-being should be prioritized for inmates and corrections officers, according to Henry County Sheriff Eric Blankenship.
The Sheriff stood behind a motion to approve funding for renovations of the Henry County Jail in the last commission meeting of 2024.
The approved motion will use the remaining American Rescue Plan Act funds to get the project going. It is expected to begin in the middle of next month.
Probate Judge David Money said commissioners recognize the wear and tear of the building, which is over 50 years old, and gladly support it being renovated.
“The total cost of renovations are $9 million, yet ARPA funds cover about $4 million,” Money said.
Money said commissioners will aim to find ways to get another $5 million while trying not to tap into their budget. No timeline has been set for the completion of the renovations.
