Health experts warn of extreme heat in Lincoln this weekend [Video]

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Excessive heat is hitting Lincoln this weekend, and health officials are urging you to be prepared.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat advisory starting Saturday afternoon. That means heat index temperatures are expected to be 100 degrees or higher for at least 2 days, and night time air temperatures will not drop below 75 degrees.

Lancaster County is also under an excessive heat watch on Sunday and Monday, with the heat index reaching 112 degrees.

Right now there are no schedule changes planned for city pools, recreation or community centers, but health experts are expecting more calls for heat related illnesses.

Lincoln Fire & Rescue said its medical response will focus on rapidly cooling people and getting them fluids.

“You want to make sure you’re drinking water,” spokeswoman MJ Lierman said. “Avoid caffeine, avoid alcohol these next couple days cause your body just needs to stay hydrated.”
