Growing Space industry launching careers for ISU Aerospace students [Video]

AMES, Iowa –This week SpaceX conducted the first-ever spacewalk for non-astronauts, not affiliated with NASA. More and more private companies are getting into the space business, and that’s good for graduates of the Iowa State Aerospace Engineering program.

“The fact that we’re now having these commercial companies that are able to go out, able to do these types of flights and these missions it’s wonderful,” said Matt Nelson, Assistant Director of the Iowa Space Grant Consortium. “It really shows how much we as a nation are expanding into space now.”

Iowa State Space Grant Consortium built a satellite that is now onboard the International Space Station. It will be deployed in September or October to study moisture in the soil.

“That’s up in ISS right now, has a moisture sensor, that’s on there again that’s providing critical information for our farmers and for people on the earth,” said Nelson.
