SOUTHBURY, CT (WFSB) – Students in Southbury headed back to school on Tuesday, a little more than a week after historic flooding hammered the town.
Typically, students are busy picking out school supplies for the year ahead. However, many spent that time helping their community rebuild.
“[We’re] starting school as normal as possible,” said Joshua Smith, superintendent, Regional School District 15. “It’s important to give that consistency and dependability our on our schools.”
Despite the destruction, all 15 schools in Regional School District 15 were slated to open as scheduled on Tuesday.
The flooding delayed the first day in other communities, such as Oxford.
On Monday, lawmakers announced that state relief was on the way to help the many affected small businesses.
A $5 million state grant will help some impacted businesses get up to $25,000 to get back on their feet.
