First-year student wins 5,000 top prize in University of Galwaystart-up competition [Video]

Damien Delaney, a first-year Psychology student from Birr, Co Offaly, has been named the overall winner of the Start100 student entrepreneur competition, run by the University of Galway’s innovation hub, IdeasLab.

Designed to empower early-stage student startups, Start100 saw 10 teams embark on a six-week programme to develop their business models.

Each team is matched with a mentor in a similar field, and are then introduced to special speakers from different industries, experts in entrepreneurial development and former Start100 participants who have gone on to set up their own businesses.

Delaney was awarded €5,000 for his visual-based app, FocusZen, which aims to combine photography and meditation.

Final year BA Commerce student David Garvey from Glenamaddy, Co Galway won the ‘One to Watch’ award and €1,000 for Arclo, which brings t-shirts and augmented reality to life.
