Essence Fest emphasizes small businesses & blacks economic & political power [Video]

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – People in Louisiana know a lot about gumbo, and the annual Essence Festival of Culture offers a ‘gumbo’ of activities, including help for small black-owned businesses and discussions on African Americans’ economic and political power.

Inside the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, the Essence Marketplace featured small businesses selling unique wares. However, the focus on black businesses is not limited to the convention center.

The Hair Glam Squad Small Business Expo was underway at a nearby hotel. Entrepreneur MeMe Kelly takes pride in organizing the event.

“This is our 10th year doing this, the Hair Glam Squad Small Business Expo so we are providing opportunities for local businesses and entrepreneurs to be able to put their skills out there during this amazing weekend,” said Kelly.

Essence brings hundreds of thousands of people to the city each year.
