Cybersecurity expert urges vigilance as scope of data breach widens | Local News [Video]

NATIONWIDE — Back in April, a Florida-based background check company called National Public Data reported a major breach of their database, which exposed up to three billion pieces of data, including social security numbers.

But the true scope of the breach and who is affected is just now starting to be understood, so if you see an email or a notice from your bank, creditors or other entities that your data may have been exposed, experts say take it seriously. 

According to multiple reports, the breach was reported by National Public Data in April when the company’s data assets appeared on the dark web. Later in early August, bad actors upped the anti when they posted the data to a forum where it was free for anyone to download.
