MAYVILLE, N.Y. — The risks of the snow and bitter cold led leaders in Chautauqua County to speak to the community on Tuesday.

The southern portions of Western New York have taken a hit from the storm, and more snow is expected.

Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel also works as a volunteer fireman. He said that things like space heaters can pose a risk.

“We try to use other means to keep things warm, home devices, homemade remedies to conquer the cold,” he said. “Make sure you’re careful because yesterday we did have a house fire in the Town of Gary. House fires at this time of the year are very common due to overuse of electrical outlets.”

Chautauqua County’s Public Health Director Lacey Wilson also offered advice on what you should do if you are headed outside.
