Missouri voters will encounter a lengthy ballot this November, featuring over 30 candidates and issues, including five constitutional amendments and a statewide proposition.Proposition A would mandate that Missouri workers receive at least one hour of sick time for every 30 hours worked and would raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2026.There is currently no organized opposition to Proposition A, and supporters are confident that backing from hundreds of businesses will help them succeed.”Our message is every worker deserves the opportunity to earn paid sick time off and every worker in the state of Missouri deserves wages where they can support their families and support themselves,” said Joni Wickham from Missourians for Healthy Families and Fair Wages. “We feel really good about our chances.” Just above Proposition A on the ballot is Amendment 7, which aims to outlaw ranked choice voting in Missouri.Ranked choice voting groups have started their campaign against the amendment, but many Republicans in the state, including Missouri’s chief elections officer, argue that ranked choice voting should be banned because it complicates elections.”We need to be doing everything possible to simplify the process to make it more transparent to get more people involved in the process so they can trust the results,” said Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft. I think its a common sense idea that people understood but never thought youd have to put in the constitution.Rachel MacNair, from the grassroots organization Preserve Local Elections, characterized the amendment as “intensely anti-democratic.” She noted, “This thing is actually banning us from having elections about it, it is shutting down the debate.”
