Executive order to end birthright citizenship would impact Marshallese community [Video]

A federal court is scheduled to discuss arguments Thursday over President Donald Trump’s executive order to end birthright citizenship, a century-old immigration practice guaranteeing that children born in the U.S. are citizens regardless of their parents’ status. The Arkansas Justice Reform Coalition, an organization that works to create fairness in the justice system, said this would have a huge impact on Northwest Arkansas and the Marshallese Community. Northwest Arkansas has the largest population in the world outside of the Marshall Islands because of an agreement between the Marshal Islands and the United States. “It’s because of the harms that the U.S. has done in conducting things on their islands,” Sarah Moore with the Arkansas Justice Reform Coalition said. “So it’s made them quite uninhabitable.”Moore said losing their protections could put some families in jeopardy. “District court matters can be as simple as, you know, someone had some traffic violations,” Moore said. She also said low-income families can be stuck in a cycle. “And to make ends meet, you know, they had to choose between, you know, paying for groceries or paying their $50 installment fee each month,” she said. This turns small violations into a bigger issue.”They end up with a failure to pay, and then that typically means a new court date,” she said.”The concern that they would then become deportable even if they are in a legal immigration status,” Moore said. “Then to think about that, these children born here, where is their country? Where is their homeland? You know, their home is here.”Democratic attorneys general from 22 states and two cities have sued Trump over the executive order, and the president faces at least five separate lawsuits over the policy.
