Cardinals could ask for public funding for stadium renovations [Video]

ST. LOUIS — A top St. Louis Cardinals executive indicated Thursday that the team could ask the city of St. Louis, St. Louis County and state of Missouri to help finance major renovations to Busch Stadium in coming years.

Cardinals President Bill DeWitt III said the franchise would engage in conversations with the city, county and state about the improvements, aimed at extending the lifespan of the more than 18-year-old stadium. It requires a “big infusion of capital,” with the investment needed in the next three to five years, he said.

The new comments make clear that potentially contentious discussions around public money for the project could come to all three of the stadium’s original public funders.
