Cades Cove to be closed during the week for tree removal, NPS says [Video]

Cades Cove Loop will close from the morning of Jan. 20 through noon on Jan. 24 and will reopen over the weekend, weather permitting, the park said.

GATLINBURG, Tenn. — The Great Smoky Mountains National Park announced that Cades Cove will be closed for five days as they remove hazardous trees.

Cades Cove Loop Road will close from the morning of Jan. 20 through noon on Jan. 24 and will reopen over the weekend, weather permitting, according to the National Park Service.

Crews will remove brush from the side of the road to keep vegetation from hitting passing vehicles and all hazardous trees that could fall onto the road, NPS said.

The process requires heavy equipment and the park said they will bring in extra crews to complete the process as quickly as possible.

NPS said if further work is necessary, the loop road will close again on Jan. 27.
