Businesses hoping to cash in on I-70 detour [Video]

HOXIE, Kan. (KSNW) – Downtown Hoxie is not used to seeing Interstate 70 traffic. The traffic was brought on by a bridge demolition project.

“We really had no idea what to expect, honestly,” said Emily Campbell with the Elephant Bistro and Bar in Hoxie. “We thought traffic would be piled up all through the intersections of Highways 23 and 24, clear down Main Street. But it has gone very smoothly.”

Smooth sailing, all things considered, but it took weeks of planning and overtime for law enforcement to keep traffic safe and slow as it rolled through the towns of Hoxie and Hill City.

“Traffic tends to get bunched up in an environment like that,” said Graham County Sheriff Cole Presley. “So that’s our concern is making sure people are keeping proper distancing and keeping their speed down.”

As heavy interstate traffic moved into the smaller towns, some businesses were eager to give people a taste of their city.
