Birmingham asking state to help create more affordable housing [Video]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Birmingham city leaders are calling on the state to help find more affordable housing options.

The city council has a list of priorities for lawmakers when they return to Montgomery in just two weeks. They include the creation of the Birmingham Housing Trust Fund.

The Birmingham Land Bank’s job is to collect vacant and abandoned tax delinquent properties, clear their title, and offer them to new owners.

The city wants to create a “land trust” to assist in this process.

WBRC is told the money could from donations or bonds, and would be used to acquire these homes and make them affordable for potential buyers.

District 7 Councilwoman Wardine Alexander said she has noticed the empty properties near her home, and she wants to see new faces move in.
