Bird flu California: State agencies address risk, prevention strategies [Video]

Health officials say getting your regular flu vaccine is still a good idea to avoid getting sick and confusing it with bird flu.

There is still no evidence of the virus spreading from person-to-person in California or anywhere else. It means the current risk to humans is still low, but there are cases not linked animal contact causing concern.

The California Department of Public Health and Department of Food and Agriculture hosted a joint press conference Friday to address the topic.

Dr. Erica Pan is a California State Epidemiologist serving as the Deputy Director for the Center for Infectious Diseases, California Department of Public Health.

“Thirty-five of the 36 human cases in California are the direct result of exposure to infected cows. A child was infected in Alameda County but had no animal exposure, the case is still under investigation,” said Pan.
