Bidders compete for Mobile Civic Center history, including chair Elvis (maybe) used [Video]

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – One city’s trash is another man’s treasure.

The soon-to-be-demolished Mobile Civic Center this week held a going-out-of-business sale of sorts.

Between the online auction that included Thursday and an earlier round a few weeks ago, the city put about 200 lots up for sale. City procurement officer Don Rose said he expects to fetch about $150,000, which will go toward a new multi-purpose arena that will be built in the Civic Center’s place.

It’s a pittance toward a $300 million project. But as Rose said: “Every little bit helps, right? And its taxpayer money, so we want to be good stewards.”

The items include tables and chairs, spotlights and stage equipment – even a stage, itself, a 40-by-60-foot stage that includes decking, framing, stairs and carts. It was the main stage used for events and drew more than two dozen bidders.
