BBB warns of twists in debt collector scam [Video]

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – The Wisconsin Better Business Bureau wants you to be on alert for scammers posting as debt collectors.

The BBB warns you to be skeptical of certain calls or texts.

This scam has been around for a while, but scammers are changing tactics to get information from you.

This is how the scam works: A person calls or texts and says they work for a loan company, law firm or government agency. They claim to be collecting an overdue payment for you or a family member.

Maybe you say that you don’t owe money. The scam debt collector starts threatening to file a lawsuit, have your wages garnished, request an arrest warrant, or arrange for a court appearance thousands of miles from your home.
