More than 2,000 children in North Carolina live in foster care, waiting and hoping for adoption, with more than 600 of them being teenagers who face tougher odds of getting adopted.Adopt US Kids says a quarter of those children are teenagers who face tougher odds of getting adopted. Now in its 20th year, Adopt US Kids has helped place more than a million kids in adopted homes. This year’s campaign focuses on teens under the tagline, “You can’t imagine the reward.” A young man adopted as a teenager shares what kids are looking for.”Wanting love, wanting to wake up in the morning and know that they’re going to lay their head down at the same place because the real big problem across the US is just not having a place to call home,” Taylor Durard said.Durard says until he was adopted, he didn’t have the capacity to dream about opportunities.”All I could think about was the easiest way to survive, the easiest way to have a roof over my head,” Durard said. Now age 20, Taylor attends college with hopes of becoming an international lawyer.”I stopped having this idea of surviving and I started thriving,” Durard said.More than 600 North Carolina teens are waiting for that same opportunity today.”When young people age out of foster care, they face far greater challenges, and it’s just more difficult for them to maneuver through life alone,” Kamilah Bunn, CEO of the National Adoption Association, said.Adoption officials say common misconceptions include the belief that you have to be married or wealthy to adopt, neither of which is true.”It’s a challenge, it’s something that we’re hoping that your viewers today take on and take the first step by visiting adoptuskids.org,” Bunn said.Adopt US Kids is a federally funded project that helps children in foster homes find permanent homes through adoption. The project also helps parents who are looking to adopt a child into their home.

The town of Lake Lure is slowly progressing toward normalcy, and businesses say they’re finally opening. It’s been a long two months for the folks at Lake Lure after Hurricane Helene dealt historic damage. “The boat dock was underwater, the canoes were disappeared. my brother’s boat house, the Mastercraft, crashed into the roof of the boat house,” Councilman Jim Proctor said. That damage extends to Tom Halladay and the team at Fae Nectar. He said the building was fine, but their property along the river was completely washed out.”Our building itself didn’t get to that much. We’re incredibly fortunate in that respect, but our property, a lot of our embankment got washed away. A lot of our, they call it the ‘sea wall,’ along the lake got washed away,” Halladay said. Still, through all the damage he’s telling customers, his doors are open. Now, mainly on Fridays and Saturdays.”Come visit in person as places open back up. I think it’d be great if they came and visited and saw the progress and kind of, like, help join us in that journey,” he said. “We’ve been having to physically move all that dirt with machines and put it back where it belongs. So we’re about three weeks into that process. We have about another week or two before we can do a final grade.” According to town officials, they’re working on long-term solutions for both the sewer system and dam.”Our boil water advisory has been lifted, and that has been for for weeks now. And our no-flush order was also lifted. I think there’s about 20 customers that are still without sewer, but we are working diligently to get them back online as well,” said Town Manager Olivia Stewman.Proctor said most of the work now is focused on debris removal. “It’s just remarkable how people get together and friends helping friends. People from all over the nation have come to help. It’s just remarkable,” Proctor said. Unfortunately, the storm may have ended the popular Flowering Bridge. “Unfortunately, it’s not stable and not usable, so we are ultimately looking at probably demolishing that,” Stewman said.
