Bars, nightclubs would need drug testing strips under bill proposed by Kirkland teens [Video]

The law would require businesses to have signage advertising the kits in addition to offering the testing strips.

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Establishments that hold liquor licenses would be required to have drug testing devices available for customers under a proposal initiated by teenage girls.

Sixteen students from Lake Washington High School’s AP government class attended a Senate committee hearing on SB 5330.

The young women originally brought the idea to their state senator, Sen. Manka Dhingra (D-Redmond).

“This is really not meant to be onerous, but really meant to be a partnership to make sure all the patrons are safe,” Dhingra told fellow senators Monday morning.

The bill would allow businesses to sell test strips that detect illegal substances in liquids.

Owners would have to display a sign that reads, “Don’t get roofied! Drink-spiking drug test kits available here. Ask a staff member for details.”
