Unions in Spain protest in push to reduce working hours | U.S. & World [Video]

MADRID (Reuters) – Trade unions led protests across Spain on Thursday in an effort to force an agreement between the government and the business sector over a reduction in working hours amid pushback from employers concerned about a rise in costs.

“The Spanish economy and companies can perfectly take on a general reduction in working hours,” Unai Sordo, leader of union CCCO, told hundreds of protesters gathered before the headquarters of employers’ association CEOE in Madrid.

“The technological advances in the way we work and produce perfectly allow for this while keeping the same pay and improving productivity,” he added.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s Socialists and their allies are seeking to persuade businesses to buy into a plan to reduce the working week by 2.5 hours from 40 hours.

The European Union must close the productivity gap between its member states to keep pace with economic rivals the United States …
