Firefighters work to contain 12-acre brush fire in Garcon Point [Video]

SANTA ROSA COUNTY, Fla. (WALA) – Several first responders spent all afternoon working to contain a brush fire in the Garcon Point area. Joe Zwierzchowski with the Blackwater Forestry Center says the fire started just after noon. Several units including Avalon Fire Department, Midway Fire Department, Santa Rosa County Emergency Management and the Florida Forestry service immediately got to work and were able to have the fire 50% contained in a few hours.

Residents from more than 100 homes were also ordered to evacuate for a couple of hours but no injuries or property damage has been reported. Dan Kottler who stayed during the evauation period had this to say:

“Dry day today just built up really quick and grabbed my tractor. See if I can catch some embers flying or something. It was getting pretty close. I just tell people to be careful about burning trash especially on dry days. Just to be …
