A former Boston Police Department officer was sentenced on Thursday in federal court in connection with committing over $20,000 in overtime fraud while working at the department’s evidence warehouse, Acting U.S. Attorney Joshua Levy’s office announced.

James Carnes, 61, of Canton, was sentenced to two years of supervised release, with the first six months served in home detention, Levy’s office said in a statement on Friday.

Carnes was also ordered to pay a $5,000 fine and $20,106 in restitution, according to the statement. He pleaded guilty in April 2021 to one count of conspiracy to commit theft concerning programs receiving federal funds and one count of embezzlement from an agency receiving federal funds.
