String of hot weather puts strain on air conditioning units [Video]

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Eastern Iowa is getting a break from the heat starting Tuesday after a string of hot and humid days that put a strain on air conditioning units.

Some older air conditioning units are breaking down.

When that happens, repairs can be complicated. Alternatively, it can cost an average of $5,000 to replace an air conditioning unit.

“So we kinda get calls all over, with mainly capacitors being so hot, those tend to go bad pretty fast,” Matt Emig with Master Plumbing, Heating and Cooling. “Low refrigerant levels, coils freezing up, systems freezing up. Kind of a multitude of different things.”

The Department of Energy says Americans replace three million heating and cooling systems each year, and spend $14 billion on HVAC services or repairs.
