Iowa Department of Education assisting school impacted by flooding [Video]

DES MOINES, Iowa (Gray Television Iowa Capitol Bureau) – Devastating flooding in Northwest Iowa this summer has impacted schools. In particular, schools in Rock Valley and Spencer suffered extensive damage.

With the start of the school year just around the corner, Iowa Department of Education Director McKenzie Snow says the department helping to coordinate supplies the districts needs.

“This work spans providing temporary learning workspaces, helping meet new transportation needs, supporting new instruction materials, coordinating counseling supports and more,” Snow said.

Snow says the department will soon give out $320,000 in emergency grant funds to support districts who have students experiencing homelessness. “Including short-term housing, transportation to school, and basic needs like food, clothing, and wellness items,” Snow said.

Officials with the Spencer Community School District say that due to extensive damage, Lincoln Elementary will not open for the year. Instead, the schools 500 students and staff will be moved …
