A former hairdresser, who discovered that cannabidiol (CBD) relieved her arthritis pain, has lost her High Court battle to be allowed to sell products which contain elements of the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, writes Helen Bruce.

Denise Lynch had argued that, provided that the quantity of the psychoactive ingredient present in the product fell below a certain threshold, the product did not constitute a “drug” or “narcotic” for the purpose of European Union law.

Ms Lynch opened the D. Hemp Shop in Cootehill, Co. Cavan, in the spring of 2021 and also has an online business.

She has told how CBD products have massively reduced the arthritic pain she suffered as a hairdresser, in her spine, hips and joints.

Judge Garrett Simons said the court proceedings had their origin in September of that year, when gardaí searched her business premises and home, accompanied by officials from the Food Safety Authority of Ireland(FSAI) …
