PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – Thousands of runners converged at the starting line downtown on Sunday morning for the 52nd annual Portland Marathon, and thousands more packed the streets to cheer them on.
Organizers said the event saw nearly 9,000 runners taking to the pavement – the most the race has seen in a decade.
“It’s a beautiful day for the city to come together and support our participants,” said Phik Dumontet, CEO of Brookesee and producer of the marathon.
This year’s 26.2-mile course took runners through many of the city’s most notable landmarks and tourist attractions. The event attracted athletes from near and far.
Val and Ty Takayama came from Beaverton to cheer on their son.
“Super, super proud, he’s been working hard,” Val Takayama said. “I hope I don’t cry. Super proud, very happy.”
